Why We Brew
We make beer because it brings people together. As the humble drink that’s enjoyed at all occasions, it is an open invitation to craft memories. Our little brewery and taproom is our tribute to Osoyoos and the people who fill it with fun. We promise great taste and a warm Osoyoos welcome with every North Basin Brewing Co. beer. Stop in for a flight or a pint, we’d love to see you!
We opened in 2020. Yes, that 2020! Chasing a dream and opening a brewery during a global pandemic is not for the faint of heart, but we’ve been humbled by the support Osoyoos and the South Okanagan has shown us. We’re passionate about making great craft beer and giving back to our community. The story has only just begun.
The brew crew
The main man
North Basin is Wes’ baby, but he’ll be the first to tell you that he couldn’t do it without his all-star cast. A former mechanic by trade, Wes swapped getting greasy for pulling pints, and you’ll often find him on hand in the taproom. Wes is also an avid runner and keen musician.
North Basin’s tastemaker. Originally from Alberta, Kody was happy to swap Albertan winters for Okanagan ones when North Basin came calling. Kody enjoys creating tasty craft beers with broad appeal while throwing in the occasional experimental curveball to keep things fresh.
How we brew
Brewing is part science, part creativity, and it all happens on location at our Osoyoos brewery. The major ingredients in beer are malt, hops, yeast and water, but how those ingredients are brought together has a significant impact on the final product. We take the finest ingredients, working to support Canadian and local wherever possible, to create craft beers that are a great partner to any occasion.
DID YOU KNOW?
During the year, we work with local farmers and producers to incorporate Okanagan fruit into our beers.
Where the magic happens
At North Basin, we’re always developing something new, but you can always rely on quality products and great taste in everything we brew.
MALT + HOPS
All of our base malt is grown and malted in Canada. We source speciality malts from Red Shed Malting in Penhold, AB. For instance, Red Shed’s chocolate is the main source of the flavour and aroma in our porter. Our hops come from Hops Connect in Vancouver. They’re the distributor of the first proprietary and trademarked Canadian hop, Sasquatch.
Our two main yeast lines come from Escarpment Laboratories in Guelph, Ontario. They make excellent products and have an ever-expanding catalogue of yeast. Canadian experts, they’re committed to quality and education and we’re very happy to use their products in our beer. Their webinars are regularly attended by brewers from around the globe.
We use a reverse osmosis system which allows us to start with ‘blank’ water. It doesn’t even conduct electricity! From the blank state we ‘build’ the water to develop qualities that suit the beer we’re making or replicate water from different parts of the world. For instance, we replicate water from Pilsen, Czech Republic, for the Pilsner, Manchester, UK, for the Wonderwall etc.
